Hi everyone! :)

Do you mix up your own food?
I mix food for my Campbells Dwarf Hamsters because they are at risk for Diabetes and I want to assure, that there is no unhealthy content in my food.

150g of mixed grains with 5 contents (NO WHEAT, rye, oat, spelt, barley, millet seed)
75g canary food without turnip rape
100g budgie food
25g buckwheat
50g seeds of (wild)gras
60g mung beans (and/or soybeans)
50g chickweed
80g protein (I take dried grasshoppers, shrimps, mealworms)

It's without dried vegetables because I daily give healthy fresh brokkoli, cucumber, salads or the like (sugar-free!!).

Do you have any recipe?

Thanks for the recipe.

Do you sprout the seeds and grains before feeding? That's what some of the members do. :P

Thanks for sharing however I have some qualms about the formulation.

You mentioned NO WHEAT, rye, oat, spelt, barley, millet seed.

May I ask why is this so? If it is something to do with the high fat content of oil. Then I would say that adding in canary and budgie food would not be ideal either cos of the high seeds content.

Btw, beans and lentils are not suitable to feed raw. They have to be at sprouted or cooked at least an hour before consumption.

I don't take wheat because lots of breeders (only Campbells) advised me against feeding it, I don't say that it's unhealthy. Wheat is highly starchy and contains much proteins. I think it's because of the protein whithin the wheat which is supposed to be in connection with diabetes. It's not the fat, wheat only has 1,8g in 100g! The seeds are necessary for dwarf hamsters because in nature they almost completely eat seeds.

The mung beans are seedlings, but they don't eat them sprouted. Soybeans I offer sprouted from time to time, but all eat them raw and I don't know about any danger of feeding them in their hard status. Do you know? I'm happy to know, if there is a risk! I don't feed lentils, I think about it, but decides against.

Is there a high % of the hamsters in Germany getting diabetes?

Most beans and lentils, it would be safer to sprout or cook them at least an hour before feeding. As for soybeans, I read that sprouting may not be ideal either. You can try running a search in google on sprouting soybeans and it will draw up the detailed explainations :D
