After allowing the 2 babies to live in harmony for a week (got them last thursday), I've finally separate them.. They didn't fight but I dont want to take any risks.. love them both equally and dont want anything to happen.. sobz =(
I've a 3 storey cage for them My link HC-041, Chip is in the bottom floor with the plastic container while Dale is in the 2nd floor.. Is it ok if i didnt give Dale a lot of bedding? he seems quite poor thing there, trying to get used to the new environment again.. and, after washing their cage, can i swop them ard? ie Dale in the 1st level, and Chip in the 2nd level? or should i just keep them as it is? * it seems unfair to Dale, but I can't get another cage due to space constraint =( my bf says i'm paranoia for separating them so fast =X

Personally, I feel that if they can live in harmony together, there's really no need to separate them. Separating them might bring another set of problems like more bedding has to used and more work has to be done.
Then again, it's up to you. If they can live happily together and are of the same sex, then why not?
As long as you constantly observe their behaviour, you should be able to separate them in the event that they turn aggressive.

If you didn't separate them for long, you can still put them back together. The chances of them fighting should be quite low, especially when they are placed close together and able to smell each other.
As for the cage, it sounds like you have those multi-storey cages that have flat platforms which are pretty difficult to put much bedding? Perhaps you can try, using some tape or cardboard/plastic to cover the bottom slightly. This way you can put more bedding without worrying that the bedding will just come out of the cage.

However are you 100% sure they are of the same age..cos sometimes new owners are told they r same but turn out otherwise den u have more den 2 in no time.
You can put abit of bedding in a bowl or inside hamhead or any housing for the top ham.
Some ham dun wan bedding anyway.. LOL
Anyway..is good u are willing separate them!!!!
u can add OVO Den or more tubes ard if u cant have more tank/cage?

you mean sex? they are same age coz they're from the same litter and same size also.. another reason of separating them is also coz I dont know how to differentiate their sexes, so play safe separate incase of unwanted pregnancy and I dont want any inbreeding.. I was told both are males though~
hee, i tape paper on the 2nd storey and put some beddings and lots of tissue for him =) and I put all his favourite accessories with him too.. Since 1st ham got the 'better' cage, 2nd ham will get the accessories~~ haha
o anyway after cleaning the cage, can i swop the hamsters around? or will it bt too stressful for them to adapt to a new environment again??

dont worry about them being lonely.. they will be enjoying their own space n no sibling to disturb them!
After washing..is fine to change..no worries de!
LOL u can add more tubes for them play..
Like the pic..i used to give the bottom kid first n 2nd level.. the other kid get the penthouse + added Den.. plus he get the tube downwards..
there r times i see the 2 brothers near each other.. (one sleeping in the tube, one under the tube.. LOL) that their meeting "place" .

A few months ago, I adopted 2 puddings which the previous owner felt that the 2 are fine together so left them be.
But when I took over and looked closely after a few hours with them, I saw torn ears! When I flipped one of the puddings to the side and spread her skin, I can also see reddish skin and some hair loss near her cheek. The other one has similar problem at her hind leg area.
These are evidence of fight though not aggressive enough to cause bleeding.
As for swapping their home, I do that every time I washed the cages. I like the idea of creating new environment for the hamsters to explore. I don't see any sign of stress when the swapping happen.

why go and take the risk.. and end up one with bloody hamster?
then come in and post "HOW AH " thread?
wont it be better if they got their own space.......???
and there is a 0% they will fight coz they are in their own storey.. unless 1 escape la...
some owners will tell u NEVER FIGHT WHAT... SQUEAK SQUEAK nia..
then come out with alot of pattern .. then only when the hamster dead or injured then will come in and make alot of noise..

But i agreed to what ruxin said, the moment they start squeaking its time to seperate them. From various article i read, when they are squeaking it shows that they are showing fear/scared..

hi Sandy,
e other kid get the tube downwards? meaning that the 3 levels are connected? coz by separating them, i removed all connecting tubes, thus they have no chance of being near to each other.. if 1 slps in the tube n 1 under the tube, wont e one in the tube jump down and meet the brother?

I play ard with the tubings and caps to block them out.
IE.. 1 of them get 1st n 2nd Floor with tubings running inside n outside.
the top boy get 3rd floor + extended tube/den upwards.. and i added tube via the platform downwards..but is blocked at 2nd floor..so the 2 bois get to meet each other on 2nd floor but they see from the tubes.. LOL..
i got alot of tubes last time to fix ard.. extend here n there.
